Product Uses

The primary application for cosmetic-grade Sodium Polyacrylate is in the manufacturing of Hydrogel Masks and patch technologies (such as under-eye patches and cooling fever strips). Its ability to crosslink and form a solid, elastic gel sheet that holds vast amounts of serum makes it indispensable for this category. In skincare creams and emulsions, it is the secret behind the popular "Water-Drop" or "Water-Burst" creams. In these formulations, the polymer stabilizes the oil phase but breaks quickly upon rubbing, releasing visible water droplets on the skin for a dramatic sensory experience. It is also used as a stabilizer and thickener in hair styling gels and conductive gels for beauty devices.

Formulation Suggestions

Sodium Polyacrylate is extremely hydrophilic. To avoid clumping (fish-eyes), it should be dispersed in a non-solvent (like glycerin or glycol) before adding water, or added slowly to the vortex of high-speed agitation. It creates high-viscosity gels immediately upon hydration without the need for neutralization. However, formulators must be aware that this polymer is highly sensitive to electrolytes (salts). The presence of high concentrations of ions (from active ingredients or botanical extracts) can cause a significant drop in viscosity or prevent the gel from forming. For salt-heavy formulas, a salt-tolerant grade or alternative thickener may be required. Recommended usage levels range from 0.2% to 1.0% for creams and up to 5.0% - 10.0% for solid hydrogel patches.
