ECM Collagen vs Hydrolyzed Collagen: Which Sample Should You Request?

Oct 13, 2026 | Market Insights

Should you request an ECM collagen complex, hydrolyzed collagen peptides, or soluble collagen? A formulator comparing those words is choosing which sample to request. A porcine dermal ECM collagen complex, a hydrolyzed collagen peptide, and a material named atelocollagen or soluble collagen are three sample requests. This page shows which request to send, and which TDS and COA to ask the supplier to match before that sample is released.

Three labels, three sample requests

  • Porcine dermal ECM collagen complex: Ask for a lot documented as that multi-component dermal matrix, together with the TDS and COA for that grade.
  • Hydrolyzed collagen peptides: Ask for a lot documented as collagen peptides or hydrolyzed collagen, together with the peptide identity documents.
  • Atelocollagen or soluble collagen: Ask for a lot whose own specification uses that identity, and ask which document title carries those words.

Use the split to write the inquiry. A shared INCI word or a similar animal source still leaves you with separate lots. Tell the supplier which label you mean, and ask which lot they will ship against it.

When the quotation is the ECM grade

The public Porcine Dermal ECM Collagen page describes a freeze-dried complex from porcine dermis, source line Sus scrofa domestica dermis. Its process words are high hydrostatic pressure decellularization, then extraction, purification, and lyophilization. It calls the grade a tissue-derived mixture whose principal INCI is Collagen, with accompanying names rather than a single molecule. It does not call this grade a collagen peptide, hydrolyzed collagen, atelocollagen, or soluble collagen.

If the quotation uses ECM, decellularized-matrix, or multi-name complex wording, confirm how this porcine dermal ECM collagen grade relates to the INCI name Collagen before you request the sample. In the same inquiry, ask the supplier for the current TDS and COA, and use what to check in the file set before sampling so the trade name, species, tissue, and full INCI list are on those documents. A porcine peptide discussion is a different request from this dermal matrix grade.

When the quotation is a hydrolyzed collagen peptide

If the quotation says collagen peptide or hydrolyzed collagen, request a peptide lot and the peptide documents. The ECM product page is the wrong specification for that lot. Ask the supplier to name the peptide identity on the TDS and COA they send with the sample.

How collagen peptides are produced, and how that manufacturing scope differs from native collagen, is already explained in how collagen peptides are made. Use that article for the manufacturing description. Keep its performance statements with the peptide discussion when you evaluate the ECM grade.

That article also names porcine tissue among commercial peptide sources. A porcine peptide source is a different sample request from a porcine dermal ECM collagen complex. The peptide article says pigskin. The ECM page says dermis. Repeat the wording on the document for the lot you intend to buy, and ask the supplier to use that same wording on the sample papers.

When the quotation says atelocollagen or soluble collagen

Neither the public ECM page nor the published peptide article uses atelocollagen or soluble collagen for this grade. This page does not add a chemical definition, molecular-weight cutoff, or telopeptide rule for those words, because neither public page states one.

If a quotation uses either word, open a third sample request. Ask which INCI line, which process description, and which document title use that word. Keep that wording on the purchase request. Accept an ECM lot or a peptide lot under that name when the specification for the quoted lot uses the same identity words, and ask the supplier to point to the sentence that does so.

How to write the request

  • One label per request: If a quotation mixes ECM, hydrolyzed, and soluble-collagen wording, split the inquiry. Ask the supplier which lot belongs to each label.
  • ECM request: Ask for the sample, the current TDS, and a COA whose header matches the dermal-matrix grade and the multi-name INCI list.
  • Peptide request: Ask for the peptide sample and the peptide identity documents. Use the published peptide article for the manufacturing scope.
  • Atelocollagen or soluble-collagen request: Ask for the specification that contains those words, and for a sample shipped under that same identity.

Next step

Send one question with the sample request: which of these three labels is the lot you will ship, and which TDS and COA match that label? Ask the supplier to send the sample for the label the documents name, and to keep the other labels on separate requests.
