Product Description

Ascorbate Oxidase is a highly specialized enzyme used as a high-efficacy formulation stabilizer. Its function is not to provide a skin benefit, but to protect the integrity of the cosmetic product itself. It is a powerful oxygen scavenger. In aqueous formulations, it rapidly catalyzes the reaction between dissolved oxygen and a substrate (like ascorbic acid), effectively removing the oxygen from the system. This protective action prevents the oxygen-induced degradation of other sensitive active ingredients, such as botanical extracts, fragrances, and natural oils. For manufacturers, it is a key problem-solving tool for preventing stability issues, particularly color (browning) and odor shifts, in complex or air-sensitive products.

Product Uses

Ascorbate Oxidase is a technical ingredient for formulators facing stability challenges. Its primary use is as a stabilizer in aqueous systems (serums, tonics, gels) that are highly prone to oxidation. It is particularly effective in protecting formulations rich in polyphenols, flavonoids (e.g., green tea extract), and other sensitive botanical compounds that tend to brown or change color over time. It is also used to preserve the olfactory profile of delicate fragrances. By incorporating this enzyme, manufacturers can significantly enhance product shelf-life and maintain the aesthetic and sensory appeal of the final product.

Formulation Suggestions

This enzyme is a processing aid and stabilizer. It must be added during the cool-down phase (below 45°C) to prevent denaturation. Its activity is optimal in a slightly acidic pH range (5.0 - 6.0). Crucially, this enzyme requires a substrate to scavenge oxygen. While it can use endogenous Ascorbic Acid, it is often co-formulated with a small, sacrificial amount of **Ascorbic Acid** (Vitamin C) to fuel its oxygen-scavenging reaction. Avoid use in formulas where Vitamin C is the *primary active* you wish to preserve. Our recommendations are for reference only; please follow the advice of your formulator for actual production.
