Lysate vs Filtrate and the Old Lactobacillus Name

Oct 21, 2026 | Market Insights

Quick answer: the words after “ferment” decide the lot. A lysate is not a filtrate. An old “Lactobacillus” label without the species is not automatic equivalence to Lacticaseibacillus Rhamnosus Ferment Lysate.

What the species-specific lysate does in a skin formula is in Lacticaseibacillus Rhamnosus Ferment Lysate: Postbiotic Lysate, Not Live Culture.

Lysate, filtrate, and ferment are four CIR lines

CIR defines Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate as a lysate of the product obtained by fermentation of Lactobacillus. In manufacture, intracellular material means the cells are harvested and disrupted. A filtrate is not that step. Lactobacillus Ferment Filtrate is the filtered fermentation product. Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate Filtrate is a filtrate of the lysate. CIR reviewed these as four separate ingredients, all mainly skin-conditioning agents, and concluded they are safe in the present practices of use and concentration. They are not interchangeable names on a purchase order.

A search for bifida ferment lysate versus bifida ferment filtrate is the same fork under another organism. Bifida Ferment Lysate on this site is still a different organism line from Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus—preparation word and species both matter.

Saccharomyces Ferment Filtrate is a filtrate from yeast, not a lysate of Lacticaseibacillus. It can sit in a ferment formula. It does not fill an order for this lysate.

The species name changed; the COA must catch up

Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus was previously classified as Lactobacillus rhamnosus. CIR’s organism table records that change. A COA that still says only “Lactobacillus ferment lysate” has not named the species. Ask for Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus, and for lysate rather than filtrate, before you treat the drum as this grade.

There is no universal CAS for every lysate grade. Do not copy a CAS from a different ferment INCI. The identity line is the organism plus the preparation.

What changes on the purchase order

Field This grade Common mix-up
INCI to lock Lacticaseibacillus Rhamnosus Ferment Lysate “Lactobacillus ferment lysate” with no species
Preparation Lysate (cells disrupted) Filtrate / lysate filtrate / live culture
Organism Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus (ex-Lactobacillus rhamnosus) Another genus (e.g. Bifida) or yeast filtrate
CAS Only if that commercial grade prints one Copied from a neighboring ferment INCI

What to put in the quote or sample email

  • Exact INCI string with Lacticaseibacillus Rhamnosus Ferment Lysate
  • Explicit “lysate, not filtrate / not live culture”
  • Marker the COA controls; CAS only if printed on that pack
  • Sample pack size, plus COA, SDS, and TDS

Documents and samples are on the product page. Send the inquiry there once species and preparation are locked.
