A toothpaste brief that names only “peroxidase” is still not a sample request. Lactoperoxidase is the milk enzyme (LPO) used in oral-hygiene chassis to oxidize thiocyanate when hydrogen peroxide is present. The short-lived product of that reaction, hypothiocyanite, is the antimicrobial species. The enzyme alone does not generate it.
How this enzyme differs from lactoferrin is in Lactoperoxidase Is Not Lactoferrin: Activity vs Iron Binding.
What the INCI is locking
The grade on this site is sold as INCI Lactoperoxidase, CAS 9003-99-0, synonyms Peroxidase / LPO / Milk Peroxidase. Appearance is a white to off-white or light yellow powder, water-soluble, with listed purity often ≥98%. For purchasing, write the INCI and ask for catalytic activity, the unit definition, and the assay method on the COA—not a protein percent alone. A figure such as 98% protein does not state how many units the gram will deliver.
The three parts of the system
Reviews of the lactoperoxidase system in oral hygiene describe the same three parts used in saliva: the enzyme, thiocyanate, and hydrogen peroxide. In a dentifrice, hydrogen peroxide is often supplied by Glucose Oxidase acting on glucose, rather than by dumping a bolus of peroxide into the paste. Without glucose, glucose oxidase does not run. Without thiocyanate (for example from a thiocyanate salt written into the brief), lactoperoxidase has no substrate for hypothiocyanite.
Lysozyme is sometimes listed in the same paste. It cuts bacterial cell-wall peptidoglycan. It does not make the hydrogen peroxide this system uses. Buying lysozyme does not replace lactoperoxidase, and buying lactoperoxidase does not replace the peroxide source or the thiocyanate source.
Dairy literature on keeping raw milk uses related chemistry for a different job. Do not copy a milk-preservation dose into a toothpaste.
How to add the powder
Add enzyme components on cool-down. The product page asks for addition below about 45°C; the dry powder is heat-sensitive above roughly 60°C. Optimal pH for activity is commonly listed around 5.0–6.5—confirm against the TDS of the lot you buy. Keep the drum dry and cool per that sheet.
If the brief also wants skin or “microbiome” leave-ons using the same enzyme, the partners stay the same: thiocyanate, a peroxide source, cool-down addition, and an activity-based COA. Do not treat oral-care and skin chassis as different INCIs; treat them as different finished-product safety and claim files on the same raw-material line.
The finished paste still needs its own preservation assessment. This system is not a substitute for that assessment, and it is not a drug treatment for caries. Marketing language such as “self-preserving” still has to be backed by the finished-product challenge testing your brand requires.
What to send before the first sample ships
Put these lines in the message to the supplier:
- INCI Lactoperoxidase, CAS 9003-99-0 when required
- Activity, unit, and assay method (not protein % alone)
- The peroxide source and the thiocyanate source, named as separate materials
- Cool-down temperature and pH window for your process
- Bench-sample pack size, plus COA, SDS, and TDS with the shipment
Batch documents and a sample are available from the product page. Match the sample activity to the dose you calculated, then scale. A clear lactoperoxidase activity line usually returns documents and a quote; a vague “enzyme toothpaste powder” line usually returns clarifying questions first.
