Lactoperoxidase Is Not Lactoferrin: Activity vs Iron Binding

Oct 20, 2026 | Market Insights

Quick answer: lactoperoxidase and lactoferrin are two milk proteins with different jobs. Lactoperoxidase is a heme peroxidase that needs thiocyanate and hydrogen peroxide. Lactoferrin is an iron-binding protein. They are not synonyms, and one COA does not fill the other line.

How the peroxidase is built into a toothpaste with glucose oxidase and thiocyanate is in Toothpaste Lactoperoxidase Needs Thiocyanate and a Peroxide Source.

Different jobs in the formula

The oral-hygiene review of the lactoperoxidase system describes an enzyme reaction: thiocyanate plus hydrogen peroxide, catalyzed by the peroxidase, producing hypothiocyanite. Lactoferrin does not catalyze that reaction. Its documented role is to bind iron, which changes what bacteria can use.

Putting lactoferrin on a purchase order does not supply peroxidase activity. Putting lactoperoxidase on the order does not supply an iron-binding protein. This site sells the peroxidase page; it does not list a lactoferrin product page in this series—so a lactoferrin brief has to go to a supplier that actually stocks that protein.

Saliva lists both; the PO still splits them

Some dry-mouth and saliva-mimic products list both proteins because saliva contains both. That is a two-line formula, not a synonym. Each line needs its own COA: activity and assay for the enzyme, and identity plus iron-binding or protein specification for lactoferrin.

Glucose Oxidase is the usual peroxide generator in the lactoperoxidase system. It is not lactoferrin, and it is not optional if the formula has no other peroxide source. Lysozyme may sit in the same paste as a cell-wall enzyme. It does not replace either milk protein.

What changes on the purchase order

Field Lactoperoxidase Lactoferrin
Job Peroxidase: SCN⁻ + H₂O₂ → hypothiocyanite Iron-binding protein
What to assay Catalytic activity, unit, method Identity / protein or iron-binding spec
System partners Thiocyanate + peroxide source (often glucose oxidase + glucose) Not a substitute for those partners
On this site Product page (CAS 9003-99-0) No page in this series

What to put in the quote or sample email

  • If the brief is lactoperoxidase: INCI Lactoperoxidase, activity/unit/method, peroxide source, thiocyanate source
  • If the brief is lactoferrin: that protein name and its assay—do not accept a peroxidase COA in its place
  • If the brief says both: two lines, two pack sizes, two COAs
  • Cool-down and pH needs for the enzyme grade
  • Sample pack size, plus COA, SDS, and TDS for each material you actually buy

Documents and samples for the enzyme are on the Lactoperoxidase page. Send the peroxidase inquiry there once activity and system partners are locked.
